What happens behind the scenes at the AAE Spring Event, ever wondered?…
Organising the AAE Spring Meeting is no small feat, but it’s a task that Operations Manager, Monique Schuilenburg and I tackle with enthusiasm each year. This time, we’re thrilled to partner with our friends at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) to bring the event to historic Edinburgh from 9-11 April 2025. It’s a collaborative effort that involves meticulous planning to ensure the meetings are not only productive but also enjoyable for everyone attending.
From coordinating schedules for multiple committees and working groups to arranging logistics for venues, catering and accommodation, there are many moving parts. The meetings themselves – covering topics from sustainability and AI to professionalism and pensions – require detailed agendas, and clear communication with all participants.
And then there’s the fun part; the memorable social program. This year’s highlights include a ‘ceilidh’ – a Scottish dance party for those of us who don’t speak Scots Gaelic, dinner at the National Museum of Scotland, a private tour of the Surgeons’ Hall Museum, and topped off with a Gala dinner at the Playfair Hall. It’s all about balancing the serious work of the actuarial profession with moments to connect, celebrate and enjoy.
Of course, none of this would be possible without teamwork. Hats off to Monique’s expertise and experience in the AAE secretariat, and my thanks for the support from the IFoA and our volunteers from all over Europe for making it all come together.
